The
Midwives Nottawasaga’s logo is an adaptation of the
Birth Symbol. It is characterized by a diamond-shaped
figure with bent lines projecting from the top and bottom.
These simple shapes suggest a pregnant female torso
with arms and legs. However, there are other interpretations
such as a womb with adjoining uterine tubes, or twin
babies attached to a single placenta. The possibilities
are endless.
The Birth Symbol is recognized as the world’s oldest
surviving spiritual symbol and is an abstract depiction
of the Great Goddess herself—a figure associated with
mothering, fertility and creation. She is the cosmic
source of life. According to one scholar, the birth
symbol “is a veneration of the birth and generation
of life.”
This pattern can be traced back at least 8,000 years
and appears in textiles, embroidery, rugs, beadwork,
jewelry and pottery from around the world.
We chose this ancient symbol as our logo to connect
the ancient art of midwifery, one of the world’s oldest
professions, with the diversity of women who come to
midwifery care bringing with them their own unique perspectives
on life, birthing and the transforming work of mothering.
